Jeff, thanks very much for doing all the research that you have. I certainly could not have done it from here. My approach on Henry Rae is to take his letter to the colonial authorities in Australia as factually correct and work back from his claim that he was a POW of the French for 7 and a half years. I'm sure he was counting the days. So, would I count back from Napoleon's SECOND abdication post Waterloo in late June 1815, or from his FIRST abdication in April 1814? I'm guessing the FIRST, in mid 1814. Tracking back 7 and a half years, I get to late 1806 or very early 1807. There were a number of British vessels captured by the French around that time, with crews imprisoned for many years. I don't have the paperwork in front of me at the moment, but there three ships that caught my eye. Following the Scottish theme, there was the 'Montrose' which is probably top of my list of candidates. There was another vessel, name starting with an A, which also looked like a strong prospect. I'm at my office now, so cannot check my notes. Had considered the West Indian angle, but still think the North Sea/Channel a more likely option.
