In the 1880 census of Brunswick County there appears the family of Samuel Benton wife Harriet and a female Sarah age 19.In the 1900 census Harriet is there with son Gaston daughter Emma and her son.
Is it possible that this Harriet was the widow of William or James Carter who shows in the 1860 census in Northwest?
After the 1860 census I find no more of the Carter family. If Mr Carter died between 1860 and 1870 then all dates would fit for Harriet to be his widow. The Sarah in the 1880 census (she didnt show in the 1860 census cause she was born after census taken) is correct age to be Sarah Jane Carter Reynolds my grandmother. This is fishing I realize, but hunting has failed so Im dropping a hook in the water!! Any help out there?
