The William and Harriet Carter in the 1860 census are the parents of E. J. Carter, b. about 1842, my great-great grandfather, John Robert Carter, b. August 1855, Mary E. Carter, b. about 1856, and George W. Carter, b. about 1858. I am not aware of a Sarah Jane, but that doesn't mean she isn't a younger child of this family. William died in 1879. I haven't been able to find them in 1870 either. John Robert Carter shows up again in 1880 in Northwest, Brunswick Co., NC with his wife Virginia Elizabeth Parker Carter (Jenny).
