Thanks for the reply, Donna. Have you found them in the 1850 census anywhere? Death certificate for my grandmother Saerah Jane Carter Reynolds shows her born in Columbus County to John and Harriet Carter, but as my mother's birthplace was Northwest, the census listing for there is interesting. I understand that there are graves for a Harriet and a John Carter near Shallotte but the dates just dont jive and her maiden name apparently is Benton, and one Harriett Benton lived next to my Reynolds ancestors in one census!! Its almost as if this Carter family just existed for one census year then vanished! Sarah Jane was born after the 1860 census was taken so would not have shown in it. You might want to look in the 1880 census of Wake County, page 1. There is a widow Harriet Carter with a couple of daughters, one named Sarah Jane but Sarah's age is off by a couple of years.
