James Muse was a Tory Capt. in he war and after sent to England from his home in eastern NC. His cildren remained here and he laer returned where he left a will in 1780's Cumberland County NC. James Muse left a slave to daughter Charity. But Charity's mother and brother sold the slave without her permission. Being a young female, she could not win a case in Feme Court. But later, after marrying James Burkhead, she filed law suit through her husband. The case went to the supreme court where as evidence, she presented a page from a bible record showing her father's birth in the 1710's.

The Muse and Burkhead families in Cabarrus descend from this line. The Burkhead family came from around Carthage (I believe) where one of the earliest of the family was a Methodist Minister. It is through that lineage that I believe led your Jesse D. Cox to give land for the Pine Bluff Methodist church. And your COX ties into all of this somewhere....
