Randy,I honestly don't know. There are several old churches up in that area. Lower Stone, Organ, and St. John's. Ya know, when that first generation settled, there was little time or desire to make fancy tombstones. Life and the times were crude. So there are very few nicely carved legible stones from the 1700's.
Slate made for a nice stone, but many of the names hae been lost when the surface flaked from the stone. Harder granite was not as nicely shaped, so it was not the best choice. Granite was a much harder material with names carved shallow in the surface. When really looked at closely, these are the stones that seem to have he best chance of giving up the life story of the first generation.
Also, so many times I hear of what is believed to be slave cemeteries ..or old indian cemeteries. They are all over the place. I believe these really old and roughly marked grave yards are the burying grounds for the first generation. Actually ...the first following the native americans. When you trace the land around these cemeteries, nearly always they fall within a home tract or a widow's dower.
