SALTER family

I'm trying to solve the puzzle of my SALTER-MASON family. My great-great-grandmother was Nancy Jane SALTER (b 1867, Carteret Co, NC) who married James E. MELTON (b 1852, Onslow Co, NC) in 1885 in Beaufort. Nancy Jane's parents are not listed on the marriage license, though Thomas SALTER is listed as a witness. On some records Nancy Jane's maiden name is given as MASON.

The pedigree I had been given states that Nancy Jane's parents were James SALTER (b 1825) and Elizabeth MASON (b 1819). This would have made Elizabeth 52 at time of Nancy Jane's birth. Plus, the 1880 census of Carteret Co (Hunting Quarters) lists Nancy Jane (age 13) as the granddaughter of James SALTER. There is one married couple in the household, David & Elizabeth SALTER both age 25. If they are the parents, they had to have married at 12. Or, Nancy Jane could be the child of another of James SALTER's children. I'm not certain.

Is anyone familiar with this branch of the SALTER family? Relatives listed alongside James in the 1880 census include Ezekiel SALTER (b 1849) and Tyson SALTER (b 1820).
