My gr-gr-grandfather was James West, the oldest son of William & Mary Shearer West. He was born in Buncombe co. NC in 1822, but lived most of his life in Cherokee county. His wife was Martha Taylor & they had 10 children. In the late 1870's 2 of James' brothers moved with their families to Van Buren co. Arkansas. Making the move with them were 9 of the children of James & Martha, they were enumerated in their own household in the 1880 census. James was in Shoal Creek twsp. in Cherokee co. in 1880, listed as a widower. I assume that with his wife dead, rather than raise his many children on his own, he allowed the older children to take them all to Arkansas with their aunts & uncles.
A few years ago I found a family story in a book about Wests, written by one of the ones who had stayed back in Cherokee co. He said "James West, another & the eldest brother, moved to Van Buren co. Arkansas at an advanced age & died there." Now I have found that James was in the 1900 census in Cherokee, age 78 years, & remarried. I cant make out his wifes name, but there is a stepson named William Williams.
I have never found any trace of James coming to Arkansas & dieing here as was in the family history I found. Does anyone know if he died in NC, or if he left for Arkansas at an old age? Can anyone tell me who his 2nd wife was? Any help or sharing of information would be appreciated.
