My grandma was Sadie Mae Whitley, from NC. She was Cherokee, her mother Rachel Thornton (no middle name that I'm aware of). Rachel was known as "Ma" to everyone, born in 1901 Johnston County, NC. Her mother and father was Samuel E. Thornton and Minnie Lee Thornton. I have pics of Minnie and Samuel but its strange, my grandma Sadie looks more indian than her, and Minnie was supposedly 1/2 or full, and my grandma had a white dad. A lot of the family was from the Selma, Wilson, Pine Level, Johnston County areas. I had an uncle, Willard Oscar Whitley who was my grandma's brother, that I heard was taken in by someone living on the reservation, not sure how long he stayed, some time between the 1930s-1960s, not sure of exact dates. Census are a dead end to me, my great grandma Rachel obviously distrusted the government, she always made sure her children listed white, even though they didn't look full white. Practically all my older Cherokee relatives passed away when I was really young (and a lot before I was born), so its hard to feel a connection with my Cherokee heritage besides looking at my family photos. Any info would be appreciated. Also, I have a lot of family buried at the Crocker Family cemetery in Pine Level, NC. Minnie Lee married Samuel Edward Thornton children: Rachel Thornton, Mamie Thornton (also married a Whitley and died in the mid 50s.), Lucille Thornton, Clara Thornton, and Leamon Thornton (children of Leamon are Janie and Frankie). Rachel Thornton married Oscar Whitley children: Sadie Mae Whitley, Needham Whitley, Ruby Leah Whitley, Willard Oscar Whitley Notify Administrator about this message?
