Donna,
First of all find out her maiden name. Then start checking the rolls for family. One of the best though it is one of the latest Rolls are the Guion Miller 1906-1908. About 47,000 people filed for these rolls. It is possible that one of your family filed an application that went back to Hettie.
Most of these records are just now being put on Footnote.com. and have the Old settlers Roll, Drennon Roll, Guion Miller Roll and Hester Roll

on the Guion Miller Roll heading.

Most of these applications are a Boon to the Genealogist looking for their family. They give the family as they remember it for about five generations. To find the rolls on line and check several of them you can type "final rolls" into the heading and it should take you to accessgenealogys site. If you dont know Hettie's name you will have to type her married name. Needless to say this is not going to be very productive. You need her maiden name. You can check other rolls also on the same site.

I was told some good advice a long time ago. Do good genealogy work starting with yourself and go backwards. Then work on the Cherokee connections, when you know your family.

Check with the Roane County Historical Society in the old Courthouse in Kingston TN. They do a heck of a good job over there and might be able to help you. Very nice people and with a lot of knowledge about the area. I would say the nicest and best I have met.
Good luck.
Mike
