Hoping to hear from anyone who can give some insight into how slaves were freed after the Emancipation Proclamation, specifically in the town of Edenton. Did the Union army ride through the town, announcing it? Did the slaveowners know that they themselves were defeated, and gather their slaves around them and tell them? I'd love to find out if there's anything written on this topic.
