Interesting question--I too would like to hear the answer. My assumption: There were numerous newspapers in the area at the time--and although it wasn't permitted legally, some of the free blacks and the slaves could read (example Harriet Jacobs from Edenton--escaped around 1840). Notify Administrator about this message?
