Hello Deloris,

Thanks for your reply. It most likely was the state census. I was thinking that since the first official US census was taken in 1790 that the 1786 reference must have been to a tax list. I wasn't aware that the 1786 count was actually considered a state census. Hopefully a follow-up visit to the Thornton Library in Oxford NC will result in my finding the correct record with this breakdown of ages.
