Having spent almost 60 years in the Aviation field in one capacity or the other here is a story that I just had to share pertaining to a Henderson County Man in Nov 1909: JAMES D WALDROP AND HIS AIRSHIP Is Jim Waldrop going to be the first Hendersonvilliam to own an air ship ? Is he to be the first man here to look down upon his home folks, to rise above a dull and sordid world, and, free as the birdies of the air, dart here, there and yon on the gentle breeze, caring for naught save a soft spot on which to light in case the blame thing got tired ? Jim says he's the man He says he can buy a nice, handy little runabout air chip for only $5000---one half cash. remainder on receipt of machine. He has been in correspondence with the New Your firm making the Curtiss aeroplane and is in receipt of much attractive advertising matter from them. After studying the sepcifications of the different models he has selected the air ship he prefers and says he's going to learn to fly on Major Barker's bottoms. It's convenient to town and the ground's soft Imagine the scene when the first air ship flight occurs in this town: The machine is on the ground. A curious throng presses close around it, marveling at its delicate strenth. A murmer----"Here he is make way"---and James D Waldrop, winner of many laurels, slowly passes through the dense crowd calmly puffing a cigarette as of Old. He steps to the machine. He pauses to fleck an imaginary speck of dust from his immaculately pressed trousers. He glances calmly over the people and withour hesitation steps into the machine. He pulls a lever. A gentle buzz-buzz-buzz is heard as the giant bird flutters along the ground, then rises--slowly, gracefully, higher and higher, and a midst of roar of applause which shakes the very heavens, heads almost straight upward into the sky. Soon it is but a speck and soon is lost to sight-and forever. For the air ship just kept agoin' and neither it nor Jim Waldrop has ever been heard of again !
