Joshua Dowell, of Union Grove township. Mrs. Nancy Money, wife of Moses, died the same day. They lived in less than one mile of each other. Her sickness had been of a lingering character while her death had been expected for some time. Joshua Dowell had been in tolerably good health up to the time of his fatal stroke. He had done a hard day's plowing on Friday, the 24th of April last, and was taken violently sick in the field a half hour before sundown. Dr. King was summoned to his bedside and arrived the next day, a few minutes before his death. The cause of death was supposed to be bilious colic. It was a remarkable event from another consideration: Mr. T. N. Dowell and wife, who live in Bethany township, came up to see his wife's mother, and upon their arrival they were both deeply grieved to find on the same day her mother and his father lying a lifeless corpse. The remains of Mrs. Money were deposited in the family graveyard in Wilkes County on Sunday following her death. The next day the body of Joshua Dowell was interred in the cemetery at Grassy Knob, in the midst of a number of relations and many friends. His death was greatly deplored by this community, but we congratulate ourselves that our loss in all probability is his eternal gain. He had turned in on his sixty second year. 8 February 1884 Synopsis: Mary Minish killed her husband Warren with an axe 5 Oct 1883. Joshua Dowell did not think the woman was sane. He heard her hallooing and praying frequently at night. She frequently remarked that she had seen her Savior and He had told her to kill Pappy (the name by which she generally called Warren.) Said she loved him but she just had it to do. The day of the homicide the witness was at the house. She said: "I have killed Pappy. I had it to do. What else could I do?" Catherine Dowell, daughter of Joshua, had heard Mary say after the killing, "Oh! Jesus, come and take me now. You said you would!" Catherine had heard her talk of communications with her Saviour. (She was found insane and sent to the Western Asylum at Morganton.) Notify Administrator about this message?
