Looking for anyone that might have information on William Johnson of Johnston County NC who died 1805….maybe late 1804. I believe I may be related to him as the result of DNA testing. Below is information related to his estate and my connection.

Below is information from a ggg grandson of William Johnson apparent son of the deceased William Johnson mentioned as versus Mildred Johnson in hearing above. He and I matched perfectly on our DNA test.

“ In regards to my information that I have found on William Johnson and Clary Gale. For many years I had thought that my William was the son a David Johnson, that lived on Black Creek just above Hartsville in Darlington Co. (first land purchase was in 1787). This David had a son named William who fit my William's possible time frame. However, I started to notice that my William's children all indicated that they and their parents were all born in N.C. (found this in US Census Records), consistently. Therefore, I took another hard look all census records and found my that William Johnson did not appear until the 1820 census in Chesterfield Co. close to Noel Johnson. I also found that the David Johnson's William was living in Darlington Co., (two distinct family info's). This led me to search the LDS Family Search on web for a William from N.C. that was married to a women with the first name of Clary, also found in census records, also recorded in New Providence Church minutes as Clarissa. Lo and behold I found a William marrying a Clary Gale in Johnston Co., NC in 1796, and this corresponded nicely with the birth of my William's children 1. Lucinda Adeline (Edy)-1797 2. Arthur B.- 1803 3. Giles- 1805 (my direct line) 4. Lewis- 1811 5. Sarah- not sure of her birth but could predate 1800. I stated researching marriage records of Johnston Co., NC books of records that I found at the Darlington Co. Genealogy (old Hartsville Depot). There I found the marriage, and noted a Charles Copeland as being his best man. While looking at NC census records from 1790, I noticed that Charles Copeland lived very close to a William (which showed he had several sons that fit) and Joel Johnson, in Johnston Co. Later while going through some court minutes of Johnston Co., I found where a William Gale's two children (Clary and a brother) were made legal wards of a William Johnson upon the death of their father in 1783. The records indicate that Clary was 12 at the time, which corresponds exactly with my William's wife born 1775. I also found that there was a big civil law case in Johnston Co. around 1819, involving William Johnson and about six other defendants who were being sued by the same Charles Copeland who was best man at his wedding. I did some research on this case, and it appears the Charles Copeland must have had a friend in the judge, because it appears he was given all that he wanted and then some. Perhaps William knew when the gittin' was good and found good ol' cousin Noel very accommodating.”

Mildred or Milley Johnson is said to be the sister of Joel Johnston. The same Joel Johnston that Noel Johnson/ton was connected to through a couple of land sales of property that once belonged to Joel Johnston. The sellers listed were Urias Johnson/wife Genne, Isaac Johnson/wife Bethany, Jacob Ferrell/wife Sintha, Fanny Johnson, Noel Johnson, David Stephenson/wife Arey, and Charlotte Johnson. Other parts of Joel Johnston’s estate were sold, but those sold after 1800 did not mention Noel since he had already relocated to Chesterfield County SC. Why did he relocate? The answer may lie in the minutes of the New Providence Baptist Church located near where Noel and William Johnson settled in Chesterfield County. According to the 1813 minutes of the church Noel Johnson was disfellowship for being married to another woman beside his wife.
This may be the reason that the female listed in the 1787 census doesn’t match the female in the 1800 census, at least age wise. The male listed in the 1787 census with Noel was apparently a son, probably not more than two years old considering Noel would have only been 18 years old, plus in the 1800 census the male child is listed in the 10-16 age bracket. There is a Noel Johnson Jr. (200 acres) listed in the taxables list of 1799 as well as a Noel Johnson (695). This could be Noel’s son though I’m not sure he could own land at the age of 14-16. That is the only mention of another Noel Johnson (Jr). Never seen anything else on him. Noel Johnson sold his 695 acres to a William Dodd in 1801 and moved to Chesterfield County being married to an Elizabeth Ware (b 1781…she fits the female in the 1800 JC census age wise). They had a daughter, Ellen born 1801, then a son John, then and a son named William. They had other sons but never one named Joel. Dna testing does verify that Noel Johnson was related to William Johnson. So was this William Johnson related to Joel Johnston? Not sure…because there is someone in the Johnson DNA Project that claims descend from Thomas Johnston Jr. through his son Obed (Joel’s brother). I have made an attempt to get the person submitting the DNA sample to verify their genealogy is proven. I have not received a reply. Their DNA sample does not match mine (its way off). If their genealogy were indeed proven back to Thomas Johnston Jr., then Joel Johnston is not related to William Johnson by blood thus it would mean Joel Johnston is not the father of Noel Johnson/ton. One possible explanation (just throwing something out there) for Noel being listed as one of the seller’s of Joel’ land is that he was related to Joel by marriage…possibly his wife being Joel’s daughter Fanny Johnson though the way Noel and Fanny are listed in the document wouldn’t suggest that relationship unless they were separated assuming a husband still had legal rights over his wife’s inheritage. Now if Noel (possible separated husband of Fanny) was the son of the deceased William Johnson of 1805 and Fanny was the niece of Milley Johnson (widower of William and sister of Joel) then both would have been given consideration for a claim on William Johnson’s estate. Fanny later was given a share in the estate from Milley Johnson. Noel was established in Chesterfield County and being (now established by dna testing) related he left his claim to William Johnson. They were apparently close since William joined him in Chesterfield County SC later on.
If anyone has any information on the above persons, or relationships of these people please contact me at cwnscott@sbcglobal.net. I would appreciate any information or input. If there are male descendants of Thomas Johnston Jr. or Joel Johnston or William Johnson mentioned above I would like to invite you to join the Johnson DNA Project.
