Today, 8/14/2000 the following book arrived from the publisher -- there are limited copies available. I have inherited original letters that were written by Kate Duncan Smith, after which the KDS DAR School in Alabama is named. I also have the original response to those letters which was written by John Harrington in North Carolina. The correspondence has been transcribed with precision and as it was written in its original form. The transcribed material includes seventy-eight pages of original hand written correspondence written and signed by Mrs. Kate Duncan Smith to Mr. John Harrington and his son, State Senator Thomas W. Harrington. The letters date from 1894 - 1907, mostly in 1894 and 1895. Also transcribed were eighty-two legal pages of hand written and eloquently phrased material, by John Harrington in response to Mrs. Smith's inquiries. These documents contain valuable genealogical data on other central North Carolina families as well as the Harrington lineage. This is a complete transcription of John Harrington's response to Mrs. Smith. The book is hard-bound, and has many interesting stories and data of the families. The cost is $18 plus $2.00 postage and handling. A few of the surnames in the book are Johnson, Johnston, Hill, Whitmel, Watts, Dalrymple, Harrington, McIver, Smith, and Stephen. The stories, as well as the genealogy, is wonderful. These families were from Harnett, Lee, Moore, Chatham Counties. Without this data as proof, I probably would have never proven my eligibility for the D.A.R. If you are interested, send a check for $20 to: Fran Harrington Davis P. O. Box 2092 POQUOSON, VA 23662
