Where is the 'north cove of the Catawaba River?' My ancestor John McClatchey had land there. It apparently adjoined a fellow named Montgomery, for John filed a complaint of trespass on Montgomery. John was: Taxed 1778 at Old Rowan Co, NC (Where?) Warrant issued for land 29 October 1779 at North Cove, McDowell Co, NC Assigned to road repairs. 1785 at Iredell Co, NC Iredell Co, NC, 1790 His will in Iredell Co, NC, covers only his estate in Iredell Co, 1799. Perhaps his son or one of his grandsons had already obtained the land at North Cove? It was still in the family as late as 1876. (William) Hamilton McClatchey Sr, son of John McClatchey, b. c. 1746 lived on this land for a while. His son: John MCCLATCHEY II born 30 November 1769 at Old Rowan Co, NC Was a Regulator 1768/71 at NC His name appears on Capt. Walter Lindsey's tax list 1768 at Fort Dobbs District, Old Rowan Co, NC Fought against Indians aft. 1771 at NC Made improvement 1778/84 at North Cove, McDowell Co, NC (exact date unknown) His dau. Mary MCCLATCHEY born 1785 at North Cove, McDowell Co, NC (William) Hamilton 'Jr' MCCLATCHY born 13 January 1786 at Statesville, Iredell Co, NC 14 April 1796, Iredell Co, NC -- 'Iredell Co. NC Land Entries 1789-1804' Where was the Fort Dobbs District and where in it was were the households on Lindsey's list? The McCanless Miscellany, written by her granddaughter, says that she and her younger brother were born in the north cove near Old Fort. This source has so far been proven correct on McClatchey information. However, it is generally believed that Hamilton Jr was born in Iredell Co. Hamilton Sr wound up living principally in Iredell Co, and so did his son Hamilton Jr, who inherited the family homestead. WHen he was about fifty years of age Jr packed up and moved west. Hamilton Sr had two sons, his eldest was John McClatchey II. John II's grandson Sheriff Wylie Meggs McClatchy m. Mary Jane Ballou 10 August 1865 at Ashe Co, NC, and their daughter Olive Ray MCCLATCHY born 1876 at the North Cove. The family had (apparently) long decamped for western NC, eastern TN, MS, TX, AR, LA, etc. The following passage regarding the Old Fort, McDowell Co, NC area: "THE FIRST INDIAN - MASSACRES. Samuel Davidson was killed by Indians in 1781 or 1782 at the head of the Swannanoa river, near what is now Gudger's ford; and Aaron Burleson was killed on Cane creek in what is now Mitchell county about the same time, probably, though the date has been lost. He was an ancestor of Postmaster-General Burleson of President Wilson's Cabinet in 1914. Davidson had belonged to a small colony of whites which had settled around what is now known as Old Fort at the head of the Catawba river in what is now McDowell county. Among those settlers were the Alexanders, Davidsons, Smiths, Edmundsons, and Gudgers, from whom iave come a long line of descendants now residing in Western North Carolina. Burleson probably belonged to the settlers around Morganton, and had ventured beyond the Blue Ridge to hunt deer. Davidson's purpose, however, had been permanent settlement, as he had built a cabin where his family was living when he was killed.[2]"--source: John Preston Arthur, History of Western North Carolina, 1914, http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nc/wnc11.htm The Alexanders are very likely to be the Mecklenburg Alexanders -- Hamilton Jr would marry a (Dorcas) Eliza Alexander of that family. Or they might be 'the other Alexanders' as his sister Mary, the one allegedly born near the Old Fort, would marry David Alexander, blacksmith, likely to be the son of Allen U. Alexander of Elk Shoal Creek. I note this is not far away from where John McClatchey II would spend part of his life, he lived near Asheville in the 1790s, then moved on to McMinn Co, TN, c. 1821. A Samuel Earl McClatchey was found living in this general area also, he was born 1819 and served with a Cherokee Removal Regiment in 1838. He lived variously at Avery, on the French Broad River, and Skyland, all in Buncombe Co. Some of his descendants slipped just over the line into Henderson. Who Samuel's parents are is unknown to me, but I'd sure like to find out. Given that the McClatchey name is rare, and the Old Fort area is not real far from where he lived, I think he must surely be an offshoot of the family.
