In the 1800 census for Mecklenburg Co., Salisbury:
William Voss, head
1 male under age 5
1 female (his wife)

The only other Voss in the 1800 census is Thomas Voss, in Granville Co., Hillsboro Dist., NC; he is an adult man with 7 or 8 children in the household. In his household there is 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45+; and 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female age 45+. I'd follow this guy as being a potential father to your William Voss or at least related.

There are several public family trees, and all have made the assumption that the father of William Voss (who married Ms. Orr) was also named William, but I don't see any records to prove that.

They also state that he and wife moved to Tennessee where he served in the militia. In the 1800 census, searching by surname VOSS, there are only 6 heads of household named VOSS across the states; 2 in North Carolina, 1 in South Carolina, 1 in Pennsylvania, 1 in Wash. DC, and one in New York.
