Hello,

My name is Joanne Brown Revell, and I live in Florence County, SC. My great-great-grandfather, John W. Brown, was born June 25, 1801 in the Steele Creek Church area of Mecklenburg County, NC. I did not know his father's name nor his family until I read the story of the Jesse Brown and the Brown brothers in one of the Olde Mecklenburg Society quarterlies. John W. Brown was the baby of the family.

His alleged father, Jesse Brown, was born in England, and his mother, Mary (maiden name unknown) was born in Virginia. I really would like to correspond with someone in this family who might have more information on Jesse and Mary Brown. I've never found one documented piece of evidence that these are really the parents of John W. Brown. I'm not disputing the story, I would just love to know where the information came from. If they are buried in Steele Creek Church cemetery, they are buried in unmarked graves. I haven't been able to locate a will or any other documents, but then I haven't been to the County library, either. Would love to see a map that shows exactly where they lived. I understand some of the Browns sold land which became a part of Douglas International Airport.

I'd also love to learn about John W. Brown's other brothers and sisters. I have learned a little bit about Benjamin (father of Col. B. F. Brown), Parker, and Josiah, but nothing on any of the others. According to the quarterly, this is the listing of the family of John W. Brown:

Jesse Brown was born on January 5, 1748/49. He married Mary whose last name is unknown and here are his Children.

1. Nancy Brown born January 9, 1779.

2. Jesse Brown II, March 4, 1781

3. Josiah Brown, born Dec. 1, 1781. He married Livina Frazer, Mecklenburg marriage bond dated June 19, 1814. His 2nd wife was Sarah Smith. Their marriage bond dated Oct. 4, 1835

4. Elizabeth Brown born Sept. 8, 1782

5. Benjamin Brown born Aug, 10, 1787, married Jane Herron, June 8, 1809, bondsman for the wedding was his brother Josiah Brown.

6. Mary Brown born Jan. 18, 1790

7.Parker Brown born Apr. 2, 1795, Married Margaret. the name of only one child is known, B. Green Brown, who married Lizzie. one of their children was Margaret W. Brown

8. Mary Brown born Nov. 10, 1798; the first Mary died as a child.

9. John W. Brown born June 25, 1801. He married Mary Herron, bond dated Feb. 5, 1828. she was the daughter of Allen Herron and his wife Esther McDowell, and she was the sister of Jane Herron who married Benjamin Brown.
(end of information from quarterly)

As it states, John and Benjamin Brown married Herron sisters, Mary and Jane, daughters of Allen Herron. Benjamin lives beside Allen Herron on one of the early 1800's census documents. John W.'s wife, Mary, died after giving birth to their son, Samuel, and she is buried in Steele Creek cemetery. My sister and I have visited the cemetery and found her tombstone. John W. then moved to GA, where he was known as a master carpenter in the Petersburg-Heardsmont area. He met and married my great-great-grandmother, Phoebe Barksdale Stinson Anthony. He was hired around 1838 by the Abbeville SC Mineral Springs Company (which included famous individuals--some responsible for the Secession--like George McDuffie, Armistead Burt, J. E. Calhoun, and others) to build the Diamond Springs Hotel. John, Phoebe and Family moved to Abbeville County, SC, where he built the Hotel/Resort and they lived the rest of their lives. John died in January 21, 1897 at the age of 95! Two sons served and died in the Civil War. John left a diary and other notes, but failed to tell us about his parents and family back home (or, if he did leave this information, it did not survive).

Would love to learn all about the Browns of Steele Creek. Please write to: jbrevell@yahoo.com. I look forward to hearing from anyone with any ideas or suggestions.

Thanks so much,
Joanne Brown Revell
