Thinking about the situation after I read your message here gives me a thought that perhaps she was "with child" and was "sent away" to protect the family from disgrace. Many young women died in childbirth. Perhaps she had an unsuitable young lover and he went and rescued her and carried her to Texas or somesuch. The stuff romance novels are made of. Very possible.
