Wilkinsons, Mecklenburg Co. 1820s/1860s

I am searching for information on William Wilkinson and Lucy Reives, who were married in Rowan Co., NC., bond date 14 July 1814, Thomas Robinson, bondsman, Jno. Giles, witness. I expect, he's the same William Wilkinson who married Drucilla Hampton, bond date 11 June 1825, Moses L. Brown, bondsman, Hy. Giles, witness. I find him in Rowan Co. in 1820 and 1830, but can't find him in 1840.

William and Drucilla Wilkinson were in Mecklenburg Co., NC in 1850, and he was listed as a shoemaker, his age given as 57, and hers as 45. Children: Esther, 22, James, 20, Joseph, 17, Frank, 14, George, 11, Mary, 9, Robert, 7, Leroy, 4. They were in Lancaster Co., SC in 1860, and he was a farmer, with $1000 real estate/$200 personal estate. His age was given as 64, hers 52. Children: Mary, 19, Robert, 17, Leroy, 16, Edgar, 8.

I expect that William and his first wife Lucy Rieves were the parents of my 3rd great grandfather, William R. Wilkinson (c.1816-1857/60). My William married Mary Amanda DeWeese (1824-1851, daughter of Jonathan DeWeese and Margaret Boyd Irvin) in Mecklenburg Co. in 1841. They had six children: Edward (b. & d. 1842, buried at Ramah Presbyterian Church, near Huntersville, NC), William (c.1843, m. Nancy Chaney in 1865), Julia (c.1844), Mary Adeline (1846-1906, m. John Andrew Field in 1865), John (c.1848) and Margaret (c.1850). They apparently moved from Mecklenburg Co. to McDowell Co. around 1845, where they appear on the 1850 census, William's occupation given as a boot maker.

In 1852, William married Mary Amanda's younger sister, Nancy Adeline DeWeese (1827-1862) in Mecklenburg Co., NC. They apparently moved to SC, where they had 3 children, Emily (c.1854), Lucy (c. 1855) and Cornelia (c.1857). William apparently died before 1860. That year, Nancy appears in the census at Mountain Island, Gaston Co., NC, and in her household are the eight surviving children, and her widowed mother, Margaret Boyd Irvin DeWeese (1796-1865). The two oldest children, William and Julia, were listed as factory hands. I believe they were employed in the Mountain Island Cotton Mill. The Wilkinsons were living next door to Wiley and Isabella Chaney, parents of Nancy Chaney who married William, Jr. in May 1865.

In October 1865, Mary Adeline Wilkinson married John Andrew Field (1846-1883) in Gaston Co. His father, Elswick Sherwood Field (1808-1867), had built and run the Mountain Island Cotton mill for the Tate family in the 1850s. Mary Adeline and John Andrew settled at Coddle Creek, Cabarrus Co., NC, a few miles from where her maternal DeWeese ancestors had lived for generations. In fact, the area was called DeWeese in the census records, and on old maps. Their first born child, Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902), was my great grandfather.

I am hoping to learn more about the Wilkinson family. I expect William Wilkinson the elder (c.1793/6-aft.1860) may have been a brother to Archibald Wilkinson (c.1800-1832), who is buried at the Old Settlers' Cemetery, Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC. Archibald married Nancy Graham in Mecklenburg Co. in 1824. Also buried in the Old Settlers' cemetery are Mary Ann Wilkinson (c.1825-1844), James G. Wilkinson (c.1825-1864) and Neill Wilkinson (c.1829/30-1863). James and Neill were Confederate soldiers. Neill served in Co. B, 53rd NC Reg't.....and I believe Robert (c. 1843-aft. 1870), a son of William and Drucilla, served in this same Regiment.

I'd be most grateful for any information anyone could give me.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
