The old saying is that a picture is worth a thousand words. If this is true, then a new book on Mitchell County will have 200,000 words. The Mitchell County Historical Society, along with regional author and historian Michael C. Hardy, is putting together a pictorial history of Mitchell County. And, we are looking for your photographs. Mitchell County has a deep and wonderful history. It also has a past with picturemen, such as Jim Jones and Paul Buchanan. They, as well as many others, captured fragments of Mitchell County history with the photographs that they took. Putting many of these wonderful photographs together will help both locals and visitors understand Mitchell County’s past. Some of you might remember the volume done in 2005 on Alta Pass. The same publisher, Arcadia, of Charleston, South Carolina, is publishing this new volume on the entire county. Arcadia has published over 3,000 volumes in the Images of America series, including books on Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Michael C. Hardy, a resident of the Toe River Valley area, is no stranger to this type of work. Among the eight books he has written, three are volumes in the Arcadia Images of America series.. His first was a volume on Avery County. This was followed by the very popular Remembering North Carolina’s Confederates, a statewide look at former Confederate soldiers in North Carolina. Michael worked with the Caldwell County Historical Society in putting together a volume for that county. Your help is needed. We need photographs (pre-1970) of people (large family groups), pastors, mayors, congressmen, schools, school groups, school sports teams, churches, decoration days, businesses, people at work, mining, transportation, (horses, buggies, automobiles), the Clinchfield Railroad, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Roan Mountain, festivals, special events, parades, important visitors, any image associated with or taken in Mitchell County. Interested in helping? Michael will be at the Bakersville Public Library on Thursday, May 1, from 5:30 - 8:00 pm, scanning photographs. He will also be at the Spruce Pine Public Library from 5:30 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 13, scanning photographs. Other dates are being planned and will be announced soon. Photographs will not be kept. They will be scanned as you bring them in and immediately returned to you. Or, if you are scanner savvy, please feel free to scan your own images. They need to be scanned at 600 dpi and at least 8 inches in width. Photographs can be dropped off at the Mitchell County Historical Society in Bakersville on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays, between 10 am and 3 pm. Please don’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of the preservation of Mitchell County’s past through its historic images. The manuscript will be turned in on July 1, so time is short.
