If anyone ties into any of these lines or has any info to offer, please contact me.

The earliest record I have for my PIERCE/PEARCE line can be found in the 1860 Census for Stump Sound, Onslow County, North Carolina. According to census records, they were all born in North Carolina. Here we find:

1860 Stump Sound, Onslow County, NC
PEARCE, Benjamin age 30 (b. ca 1829)
PEARCE, Ann age 26 (b. ca 1833)
PEARCE, (James) David age 4 (b. ca 1855)
PEARCE, B.F. (Benj. Franklin) age 2 (b. ca 1857)
PEARCE, Mahala age 1 (b. ca 1858)

I cannot locate Benjamin Sr. or Mahala in the 1870 Census, leaving me to believe that perhaps Benjamin died in the War Between the States. Perhaps Mahala died as well since she would have only been roughly 10 years old in 1870 and not old enough to have been married. It is possible that if Benjamin died in the War, Ann may have had to move in with a family member and sent the boys to work as farm laborers. There is an Ann PEARCE in the household of John PEARCE that could possibly be the wife of Benjamin.
In the 1870 Census, I was able to locate both David and Benjamin (Jr.) in the household of Winslow Wilkings (see WILKINGS notes) where they worked as farm laborers.

1870 Census Stump Sound, Onslow County, NC
WILKINGS, Winslow 35 Farmer
WILKINGS, Caroline 20 Keeper of House
PEARCE, David 15 farm laborer
PEARCE, Benj. 13 Farm laborer

By the 1880 Census, both brothers were married and in their own household, living next door to each other, working as turpentine farmers/makers. A James SANDERS also lived next door with wife Victoria. He was their age and possibly related (?) as he was also in the turpentine business. Benjamin PEARCE Jr. married Eliza Jane LNU and David married Huldah Coston.

1880 Census Stump Sound, Onslow County, NC
PEARCE, David 25 Turpentine Farmer
PEARCE, Hulda 18 Keeping House

Next Door…

PEARCE, Benjamin 24 Turpentine Maker
PEARCE, Eliza Jane 20 Keeping House

David PEARCE essentially disappears after the 1880 census. We do know that both David and Huldah were already deceased by 1916 as indicated by the marriage license of their son, William Henry PIERCE (see below). Family record states that David and Huldah also had two other sons, James Franklin PIERCE and Benjamin “Benny” PIERCE, but this hasn’t been substantiated yet.
Benjamin PEARCE Jr., however turns up again on the 1910 & 1920census for Stump Sound. It was also in this time frame that the spelling of the name changed from PEARCE to PIERCE.

1910 Census Stump Sound, Onslow County, NC (page 219B)
PIERCE, Benjamin 60
PIERCE, Eliza Jane 52
PIERCE, Liza J. 21
PIERCE, Johny W. 17
PIERCE, Richard 12 (b. 14 Nov 1897 d.May 1971)
PIERCE, Davey 9

1920 Census, Stump Sound, Onslow County, NC (page 17A)
PIERCE, Benjamin F. 72
PIERCE, Eliza J. 68
PIERCE, Eliza J. 23
PIERCE, Davey 19

On the 1920 Onslow County census, we also find another B.F. PIERCE and family. I originally assumed that he was perhaps the son of Benjamin & Eliza. However, since Benj. & Eliza named a son Davey after Benjamin’s brother, David, it is possible that this B.F. PIERCE could be the son of David and Huldah.

1920 Census Stump Sound, Onslow County, NC
PIERCE, B.F. 33 (according to WWI Draft Registration Card, birthdate is 18 Jun 1885)
PIERCE, Mattie 29
PIERCE, Hazel 12
PIERCE, Irene 8
PIERCE, Juanita 3

William Henry PIERCE, the son of David and Huldah COSTON PIERCE, had migrated to Pender County, North Carolina by the time the 1910 Census was taken. He had married a woman by the name of Fannie LNU, but it is uncertain whether they were married in Onslow, New Hanover or Pender Counties.

1910 Census Topsail Township, Pender County, NC
PIERCE, William H. 29 Locomotive Engineer
PIERCE, Fannie 21
PIERCE, George C. (Candos) 4 (b. 22 Jan 1905 d. 8 Sept 1996 in Lenoir, NC)
PIERCE, William C. (Clifton) 1 5/12

The family lived in a lumber mill community and had been married for six years according to census records, thereby making the marriage date around 1904.
Fannie apparently died sometime between 1910 and 1916 (possibly during childbirth?). By 1916, William Henry PIERCE had migrated to Halifax County in northern North Carolina. On 2 April 1916, Wm. H married Pattie Irene GARDNER at the home of her father, Robert A. GARDNER. According to the marriage certificate, both of Wm. H. PIERCE’s parents were already deceased. According to the World War I Draft Registration Card for William Henry PIERCE, he was born on 7 August 1881. His occupation is listed as a Log Woods Farmer for Farmer’s Manufacturing Company. He was of medium height and build with grey eyes and black hair.

On the 1920 Census for New Hanover, North Carolina, Clifton. W. PIERCE, son of Wm. H. and Fannie PIERCE, was found living in the household of an Aunt, Carrie JUSTICE. This leads me to believe that perhaps Fannie was a JUSTICE before she married. I was not able to locate George Candos, brother to William Clifton PIERCE on the 1920 census, but it is possible that he too was sent to live with relatives after the death of his mother.

1920 Census Wilmington, New Hanover, NC (page 6B)
JUSTICE, Carrie Head 34
JUSTICE, Lora Sister 20
PIERCE, Clifton W. Nephew 11
JUSTICE, Davey B Nephew 19 (Davey belongs to Willow N. & Mary A. Justice that are found on the 1900 census for Pender County, NC)

Sometime around 1921, William Clifton PIERCE was killed in a sawmill accident. Since he was in Wilmington in 1920, it is assumed that that is where the accident occurred, but documentation has not been found yet.
