Can anyone help me straighten out the generations and dating of the confused and poorly documented EVANS/WYNNS lines? Based on the known vital records, there are major dating problems that need sorting out. Here are the two intersecting lines, as I presently understand them: Peter1 EVANS (son of Griffith EVANS), of Richmond Co., VA, b. ??, d. ca. 1706 in Richmond Co., VA (will proved); md. Elizabeth PERRY, b. ??, d. aft. 1706. Peter1 EVANS emigrated from Barbados to VA 1650, bringing with him w. Elizabeth & ch.: Peter2, John2, Richard2, & Sarah2. Sold land 1664 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. His will, proved 1706 in Richmond Co., VA, names the same w. & ch. (Winslow, Hist. of Perquimans Co., N.C., 1931, p. 346; Shannonhouse, Year Book Pasquotank Hist. Soc., vol. 4, 1983, p. 179.) Peter1 EVANS is assumed to be f. of: Peter2 EVANS, b. bef. 1650 [ca. 1645?], d. ??; md 16__?? _________. [Shannonhouse, 1983, cited below, says Peter2 md. Sarah WYNNS. I believe she has collapsed two generations of Evanses, as explained below.] Peter2 is assumed to be f. of: Peter3 EVANS, b. ?? [ca. 1665?], from Richmond Co., VA, to Hertford Co., N.C., later settled in Bertie Co., N.C., d. ca. 1754 (will dated); md. Sarah WYNNS (Wynn, Wynne), b. ?? [ca. 1695?], dau. of Capt. George WYNNS and Rose BUSH. (George WYNNS b. ca. 1675, d. Bertie Co., N.C., bef. 25 May 1751 [will proved]; George md. 16__?? [ca. 1694?] Rose BUSH, dau. of William BUSH, she b. ?? [ca. 1675?] & d. aft. 2 Feb. 1750/1, named in George’s will of that date. For WYNNS/WYNN/WYNNE info., see Armstrong, Historical Southern Families, Vol. II, pp. 267-69, repro’d on Broderbund Family Archive CD #191, Southern Family Histories/Genealogies, or online at familytreemaker.genealogy.com). Peter3 EVANS and Sarah WYNNS were parents of: Robert4 EVANS, b. N.C. bef. 1695 [ca. 1686?], d. Perquimans Co., N.C., bef. May 1745 (date of inv.); md. bef. 1733 in prob. Bertie Co., N.C., Ann LANE, dau. of Christopher LANE & Christiana _________. (See Shannonhouse, Year Book Pasquotank Hist. Soc., vol. 4, 1983, p. 179, for evidence of this marr.) Robert4 was b. bef. 1695 because his f. Peter3 deeded 235 ac. to him on 19 April 1715. Robert4 was thus at least age 21 then & therefore b. 1694 or bef. – Winslow, Hist. of Perquimans Co., p. 348 – b., say, 1686, based on b.d.’s & marr. dates of next 2 gen.’s.) – Robert4 EVANS and Ann LANE were parents of: Rebecca5 EVANS, b. N.C. ??, d. ??; md. ?? [ca. 1730?] Thomas HARRELL III, b. N.C. bef. 1712, d. 1763 Edgecombe Co., N.C. (son of Thomas HARRELL II [d. 1741] and Elizabeth _________ [d. 10 Aug. 1778] of Bertie Co., N.C.) Rebecca5’s brother was: Robert5 EVANS, b. N.C. ?? [ca. 1706?], d. Perquimans Co., N.C., bef. 7 Jan. 1758 (will proved, Perquimans Co.); md. ?? [ca. 1727?] _________. Robert5’s will names sons John6 and Robert6 and dau's Sarah6 GRIFFIN, Elizabeth6 & Mary6 EVANS, gr-children: Demsey7, Aaron7, Robert7, & Huldah7 BLANCHARD. -- His inv., Jan. 7, 1758, Robert EVANS, Ex. This is presumably his son Robert6, who was thus age 21 or older in 1758 & thus b. bef. 1737, so Robert5 md. by this date & doubtless by ca. 1727, based on Robert6’s 1749 marr. date & inferred age of ca. 21 then. Robert5 EVANS and _________ were parents of: Robert6 EVANS, b. N.C. ?? [ca. 1728], d. Perquimans Co., N.C., 6 Jan. 1797; md. aft. 5 July 1749 Elizabeth JESSUP (Jessop), b. Perquimans Co., N.C., 24 Aug. 1730, dau. of Thomas JESSUP and Jane CLARE. (Encyc. of Am. Quaker Geneal., vol. 1, p. 48, Perquimans MM, N.C. – 1749, 5, 5, liberty to marry Elesabeth Jessop.) The b.d. of Sarah WYNNS, w. of Peter3, is unknown. Her parents George WYNNS and Rose BUSH had 7 reported ch., but the b.d. of only the eldest son John is known to me. Children of George and Rose (WYNNS), as given by Armstrong, Historical Southern Families, Vol. II, pp. 267-69: 1. John, eldest son, b.1708, d. Bertie Co., N.C., 1752 (N.C. Wills 1663-1789, Vol. XXXV, p. 67); md. (1) Mary BOONE; (2) Sarah VAN PELT. 2. Benjamin; md. (1) Catherine BAKER; (2) Margaret PUGH. 3. Joseph, md. Judith PENNY. 4. George. 5. Mary, md. Cullener SESSOMS. 6. Sarah, md. Peter3 EVANS (above). 7. William, d. N.C. 1757; md. Elizabeth DEANS There are obviously serious errors somewhere in the foregoing genealogy, since Sarah (WYNNS) EVANS, b. aft. 1710, is the mother of Robert4 EVANS, b. bef. 1694, in say, 1686. As reported, though Sarah is #6 in WYNNS birth order, she could have been b. well bef. bro. John, in say, 1695. Or, if the above birth order is more or less correct, she could have been b. as late as, say, 1715. (Her m. Rose BUSH would have been abt. age 40 in 1715, if b. ca. 1675). Some online researchers estimate Sarah’s b.d. as late as 1720/25. But all this dating would be incorrect if the EVANS generations have been correctly identified (a big IF), because Sarah’s son Robert4 EVANS was b. bef. 1694 & more likely ca. 1686 – if the right Peter and Robert EVANS have been identified in the 1715 deed. If one assumes the dating of the EVANS generations is correct, then Sarah WYNNS was thus b. at least ca. 1678, & more likely ca. 1665, consistent with her husb. Peter3 EVANS’ est’d b.d. of ca. 1665, but 11 yrs. before her f. Geo. WYNNS’ reported b.d. of ca. 1675. The only supporting evidence I have seen for setting the b.d.’s of Geo. WYNNS’ ch. is the 1708 b.d. of eldest son John. If this b.d. has been incorrectly reported, then the WYNNS ch. could have been b. 30 yrs. earlier, which would better track with the rest of this chronology. Yet George WYNNS, who d. 1751, could not have been b. much bef. 1675, meaning that his dau. Sarah WYNNS’ correct b.d. must be ca. 1695 or later. Something is amiss. I assume that Peter2 EVANS did not marry Sarah WYNNS, and that Sarah’s husb. was instead a son Peter3, because of evident errors in Shannonhouse’s EVANS genealogy in the Year Book Pasquotank Hist. Soc., vol. 4, (1983). She says Peter2, who came to VA 1650 with his father Peter1, md. Sarah WYNNS and made his will in Bertie Co., N.C., in 1754, at the highly unlikely age of at least 104. It is far more likely that there was yet another Peter (my Peter2), b. ca. 1645. Shannonhouse also says Peter2’s son was Robert3, and that Robert3’s will was proved in Jan. 1758. In reality, the 1758 will was that of Robert5, demonstrably the son of Robert4, who d. 1745. Can anyone else help me untangle these lines or point out where I have gone off the rails? Will gladly share data and sources. Richard Wilson, Bellevue, WA rrw@hcmp.com Notify Administrator about this message?
