In 1817 my great-great-great-grandfather, Caleb Elliott, believing slavery to be wrong, left Perquimans County, North Carolina and emmigrated to Seymour, Indiana where he purchased a large tract of land. There he freed his slaves. Because they chose to remain with the Elliott family on their land, houses were built for them and they were paid wages to work on the land. I do not know their names, but I think there were at least 8 of them. They may have taken the surname Elliott. I hope this piece of information will help someone track down their African-American ancestors.
