Hello Charles,
I have a Robert Brooks in my data who was born ca.1819 and was married to Sarah Capel in Person County 25 August 1841. He was a son of Mathew Brooks and his wife Elizabeth Brooks, daughter of the Rev. John Brooks. It is possible that the use of Robert Brooks, Jr. was to indicate that he was a younger Robert Brooks in the area, to separate him from an elder person by that name.
This Robert Brooks was the father of Mary Ellen Brooks who married my second cousin two generations removed. Another daughter, Elaine Anna Brooks, was wife of John Dolphin Harris.
I don't know if this is much help to you or not, but I present it as a possibility for your consideration.
