Mumfords of Pitt County

I am trying to find more information about my G-G-G-G grandfather William Mumford (lived in the Swift Creek area of Pitt County around 1800-1810). He was married to Sarah Pugh (daughter of Stephen Pugh), and had two sons "Lewis (or possibly Louis)Mumford, and William Joseph Mumford."
I am a direct decendant of the Lewis line. I know that he was in the NC militia during the War of 1812, serving in the 2nd Regiment 3rd Company detached from Pitt County.
He can be found in the 1810 census, but by the 1820 census he is gone. Sarah and the two boys can be found in the 1820 census living with her father (Stephen Pugh).
I know others have also hit a road block with William Mumford, but I hope there is a way to detirmine more about him. If I ever go to Washington DC, I will try to obtain a copy of William's military pension that went to Sarah.
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.
