Gaddis Family

I have been researching the Gaddis Family of Randolph Co., NC for quite sometime now. I also have been in contact with my cousin who has sent me his list of unsolved questions. These are questions that he and I both have regarding them.

Our problem starts with Franklin Gaddis who was born about 1829 and died before 1896. Several family trees give his parents as John Gaddis and Rebecca Arnold Wood Gaddis. However, we have no claim or proof regarding this. We have read letters from Randle Austin Gaddis, and he states that his great-grandmother was Rebecca Arnold Wood; his grandfather was Hillard Gaddis, brother of our Franklin Gaddis.

My cousin has a copy of the will written by John Gaddis which was written November 18, 1833. The will lists his wife Rebecca Morgan and all of his children: Asel, Rebecca, Polly, John (b. abt 1808), Zebedee and Noah. They were all base born to Rebecca Morgan, whom John married in November 1829 in Davidson Co., NC. If the son John was the father of Franklin, he has a odd way of showing it.

On November 6, 1841 in Randolph Co., NC Court Records, the following were bound out under Apprentice Bonds: Branson Gaddis bound out to Ansel Gaddis, Franklin, James and Elizabeth Gaddis bound out to Penuel Wood, Hilliard Gaddis bound to Joseph Hoover. Court Records show that William Wood was ordered to bring to November Court, Franklin Gaddis at James Gaddis’. Hilliard Gaddis at George Gaddis’, & James Gaddis, Elizabeth Gaddis & Branson Gaddis at Ansel Gaddis'.

We would like to think these were one family of orphans, not the children of John Gaddis who was born in 1808 who married and moved to Kansas without any of these children. So this still leaves me without any real clues to his parents names.

The next real oddity is in Franklin’s Estate papers. Court records for 1899 Final account & settlement on 8 July 1899, shows distribution to Savanah Jarrett, wife of
A.W. Jarrett, Dovie Briles, wife of William Briles, and the following to G.W.Rush, for Louisa Johnson, wife of Addison Johnson, now deceased Ellen Steele, wife of William Steel, Hattie Gaddis. He is shown to have died before 25 Feb 1896. However, no mention is made of his wife in the will. I have found Elizabeth and Hattie
Gaddis living together on the 1900 census and only Hattie in 1910. So I have to assume Elizabeth died between 1900 and 1910. though I’ve found nothing further on her death.
As per 1900 census, Elizabeth had 6 children with 4 still living. Sarah Louella and Ellen G. Steele had both died before this.

This is most of what we know about Franklin Gaddis at this time. It comes from family letters, census and court records.

Where do we go from here?

Lee
