Hi - I happened on your request for information on parents of Jacob Auman & wife Rebecca Steed Auman, & saying Jacob Auman was the son of Andrew Auman & Barbara Luther. I have some info & where you might find more. First, I am related to the Luthers by my gr-gr-grandmother, Caroline Luther who married my gr-gr-grandfather Williamson Cranford. In the 1980's while researching, I found a good bit of Luther family information at the Asheboro, NC public librry in a Luther surname file. Asheboro is located in Randolph County, NC where many of my ancestors settled. Caroline Luther Cranford was the great-grandaughter of Michael Luther. Michael Luther was a brother of Barbara Luther Auman. At the time I gathered this info, there was a North Carolina Luther Family Association publishing a newsletter for the descendants of Barbara Luther Auman & her brothers Michael, George, Jacob & Christian Luther. I have no idea if that association still exists, but if you'll email me, I'll provide the contact names & addresses from back then. I have too many birth, death dates & descendant information to list in an email (I have a 2" ring binder full of handwritten info & photocopies). I show Andrew Auman b.circa 1759, d. circa 1839 & Barbara Luther Auman b. circa 1764, d. circa 1798. This info I have was gathered before computer internet info was available, so more info may be available now. Also, I never verified the info myself, so I apologize if I pass on anthing inaccurate. What I found most interesting among the information was transcibed pension applications filed for Michael, George & Jacob Luther & Andrew Auman for their military service during the Revolutionary War. Each application provides wonderful details about their service years - their duties, leaders, battles,& includes a family info too. That information says both the Luther & Auman families imigrated to America from Germany. The Luther men left Strasberg on Rhine, Germany as small children, to come to America with their parents around 1759 - they lived in the Alexandria, D.C. area about 6 years, before the family settled in Frederick County, MD. Andrew Auman & the Luthers lived near Frederick Town, MD at time they entered military service. Their families were members of the German Presbyterian Church in Frederick Town, MD. George Luther was married to Andrew Auman's sister, Elizabeth Auman. Andrew Auman moved in with George & Elizabeth Auman Luther in order to learn the shoe & bootmaker trade from George. After Andrew Auman's military service, he married George's sister, Barbara Luther. When the war ended, George Luther & Andrew Auman bought a tract of land together in Frederick County & settled on it, living within a mile of each other. Later they sold the land & moved to Randolph County, NC. That move to NC took place about 1794. I have a note that the name Auman basically means "meadow man" in German - the man who took the cows to the high grazing meadow in the Alps in the summer. I don't know the names of the parents of Michael, George, Jacob, Christian & Barbara Luther -could be that info is now available, but I haven't looked for anything about this family line in a long time. George & Elizabeth Luther's son, George Luther, Jr. applied in 1839 for his father's revolutionary war pension to be given to his mother. George Luther Jr. stated to Thomas Ragland, a Justice of the Peace, in Chatham Co., NC that his father had a large bible in which he kept his family records "brought by his grandfather from Strawsburg in Switzerland & printed in the German language" which was claimed as joint property by all the family & was at various times in the possession of one or another of them. The old bible was worn & George Jr transcribed the family record , but stated he thought both bibles were now lost or destroyed. A note in some of the Luther info says the transcribed version was later in the possession of George Luther Jr's cousin George __?__ in Dickson County, TN. The last name of the person having the bible wasn't included! A note says "one Dickson Co relative read this entry from an old Bible to another cousin: John George Luther, Jr b. 6.5.1714, Strasburg, Germany; married Maria Barbara Naegel 1731; died 6.5.1741, Strasburg, Germany. Also a note that a 1768 will in Frederick County, MD of Michel Luther names his wife as Salome. Don't know if that may be the parents. Some of this info comes from a booklet I copied which says NC Luther Family Association "Three Generations" edited by Janice Hagan she has hand signed & dated it, Janice K. Hagan, May 7, 1985. Note: Strasberg or Strasbourg sits on the French/German border, near Lictenstein & Switzerland - the borders have changed during the course of history - the city was German for a long time, but is now is part of France. It is in the "Alsace" region I visited there very briefly (part of one day) about 15 years ago & it is a lovely old European town. I only wish I could have seen more of it. Hope that at least gives you at least a little info on where Barbara Luther Auman & Andrew Auman came from.
