I'm not related, but this might help.

In the 1860 US Federal census, there is a record in Cumberland Co., NC, for a Jos. B. Braddy, b. ca 1824 (as your man was) as follows:

Cumberland Co., NC, July 1860, Fayetteville
Dwelling 490:
Jos B. Braddy, age 47, merchant, b. NC (born about 1813)
Sarah A. Braddy, age 31, b. NC (notice the S for Sarah)
S. E. Braddy, age 11, female, b. Alabama
Mary L. Braddy, age 10, female, b. Alabama

For the 1870 census in Texas, the person who indexed those records certainly messed them up! I agree with you that the entry is for J. Brady (not L. Brady as the index shows), and he was born in NC (not SC as the index shows). It looks very different when you look at the actual image of the record.
