Thank you for the info. The birthplace of parents adds to the puzzle. I have a rather odd little problem I'm hoping to sort out. Back around 1805 a man named David Reynolds & his wife Phebe Wildey, dt of Richard Wildey (Wildey=Wilde=Wiley - the name switches very easily & sometimes deliberately) moved from Dutchess Co, NY to Essex Co, NY. I have never been able to firmly determine the names of their children. There is no smoking-gun document. In 1850, the widower David Reynolds had Eli Wylie, b 1824, VT with wife Hannah & children Esther & Edgar. Nearby was a Jesse Reynolds of an age to be David's son. In the household was Wylie Reynolds, Jesse's son. In later years he seems to have moved to MI & become Wiley Richard Reynolds. I believe that he may have been named for Richard Wildey, Phebe's father, his great-grandfather. However, the appearance of Eli Wylie in David's household mucks things up. Eli (b. 1824, VT) cannot be Phebe's nephew. So then the question becomes is he a cousin or no relation at all? It also means that there could be an additional source for the name Wiley in the Reynolds family other than Phebe. That NH birthplace of Eli's parents makes it more likely that Eli was a coincidence. However, that doesn't mean that his group of Wylie's were not in the mix to muck up my naming pattern theory. Notify Administrator about this message?
