From the Nebraska State Journal, Lincoln, Wednesday, March 1 1939. ULYSSES PIONEER DIES Mrs. Laura A. Smith had been in State since 1874. Laura A. Smith, 82, widow of Jedediah S. Smith, died Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. E. Perry, 1303 No. 26th St., where she had made her home for the past two years. Previous to that time she had made her home on a farm near Ulysses. Mrs. Smith was born in New York State and came to Nebraska in 1874 to make her home with a sister who then lived in Seward County. She taught two terms in a rural school and was married in August, 1876. Besides Mrs. Perry she is survived by three sons, Arthur M., Leslie N., and Leland J., all of Ulysses, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild . Funeral services will be held at Ulysses Methodist church Friday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Mr. Hansbury officiating. Laura A. Smith was the sister of my paternal GG-Grandfather Orrin S. Merrill . They were born in Delaware County N.Y., probably in Franklin . The sister Laura went to Nebraska with was Sophia L. Merrill Gifford . Sophia , husband and children were back in Delaware County, NY by 1900 . Notify Administrator about this message?
