You can probably go back at least one generation prior to William Merrill and determine that his father might have been Samuel Merrill. In the 1880 census for Seward Co., Nebraska, Pct. 1, enumerated June 1st, there are two Merrill families living quite near each other in that county, one with an elderly man and woman named Samuel Merrill (age 75, b. England) and Martha Merrill (age 72, b. England). These might be the parents of your William, and perhaps John Merrill is their son and a brother to your William? Dwelling #1. John Merrill, age 27, farmer, b. England, parents both born England Catherine Merrill, age 22, b. Canada, parents both born Canada Joseph Merrill, age 4, b. OH, son Samuel Merrill, age 2, b. OH, son Samuel Merrill, age 75, b. England, father Martha Merrill, age 72, b. England, mother Ephraim Galloway, 41, brother-in-law, carpenter, b. Canada Samuel Galloway, age 14, b. Canada Allice Ann Galloway, age 12, b. Canada Martha Galloway, age 10, b. Canada John Galloway, age 7, b. Canada Dwelling 12. William Merrill, age 42, farmer, b. England, parents both born England Mary Ann Merrill, age 38, wife, b. Canada Benjamin Merrill, age 15, son, b. Canada Mercella Merrill, age 13, daughter, b. Canada William H. Merrill, age 10, son, b. Canada Herber F. Merrill, age 8, son, b. Canada Elizabeth Merrill, age 6, daughter, b. Canada John Merrill, age 4, son, b. Canada So as of 1880, the family had not been in the U.S. more than 3-4 years, having apparently come from Canada to the U.S. This might be the family for which there is a public family tree at Ancestry.com, showing Samuel Merrill who married Martha Whiston, and they had children John, William, Joseph, etc. I think you can access that record since it's public. Good luck. Notify Administrator about this message?
