Johan Neubecker: Going to Gauersheim This Weekend
Hello Fellow Nebeker Descendents:
My name is Andrea Meyer and I am a little bit new to the whole genealogy thing, though I'm finding that it gets addictive once you start. Anyway, I have a PAF file that my brother has painstakingly constructed over the years which indicates that I also have a connection to the Neubecker/Nebeker - Germany or Switzerland controversy. I had no idea such a controversy existed, but since it looks like the information in my brother's PAF file differs from what I've been reading here, there's obviously a mix-up somewhere.
I am descended from (according to the PAF file):
Johan Hans Neubecker (who also seems to have been tagged with the middle name of Martin according to some of you), who was born in Gauersheim, Pfalz, Bavaria (it's actually not in Bavaria anymore, but the state of Rheinland-Pfalz and is only about 42 miles from where I now live in Heidelberg). The birth date I have is also different (and seems a bit wacky to me, actually): 13 November 1707. He married Anna Marie Stilley from New Castle, Delaware on 30 October 1755. The other weird thing is that we have information that this same Johan Hans/Martin Neubecker was, however, Christened in a place called Hilterfingen, Bern, Switzerland (Gosh, what a beautiful place!) on 1 January 1730, which would frankly make a lot more sense with the 1729 birthdate. (But that still begs the question about why he was born in Gauersheim and then went all the way down to Hilterfingen to get Christened, though I can imagine that happening.) But I notice several of you have a town called Haefelfingen, in the canton of Basel instead. I notice there are different spellings, middle names, dates etc. compared to what I've been reading on the forum. Help!
Anyway, the point is, since I'm only 42 miles from Gauersheim, I figured I'd go visit this weekend with my digital camera, a notebook and writing implements. I've never done this before, but I'm hoping that maybe I can find something useful for all of us? Do any of you have any advice, or any documents that prove that my information is incorrect (because I am willing to give that some of it probably is). I lived in Switzerland for 18 months and speak German too, though I don't really have a lot of experience reading old German script. I also plan to get back down to Switzerland sometime to visit Hilterfingen (I've been there before... it's breathtakingly beautiful) or Haefelfingen (never been there or heard of it before).
I hope someone checks this forum regularly. It looks like nothing has been posted here for awhile.
