Bert Zwiep -
On May 30th, 2009 Bert Zwiep passed away in Portage la Prairie at the age of 76. Dad was born in the Netherlands on June 16th, 1932 where he grew up and met his wife Mienie. They were married on May 17th, 1957. In April 1960 Bert and Mienie, along with their first child, immigrated to Canada. They lived in Winnipeg for 5 years and in that time added two more children to their family. He was then given the opportunity to move his family to Portage and was employed with Prudential Insurance. In 1970 he began his career at the Manitoba Developmental Centre where he retired from after 21 years. In 1973 his family was complete with the birth of their fourth child.
Bert's love of carpentry shone through the house he built with his family in the Peony Farm. Quite often Dad could be found in his workshop making many wonderful wood projects. These included birdhouses, furniture and toys. A favourite Christmas pastime was spent playing Santa Claus in the Portage Mall which he enjoyed for 15 years.
Dad was extremely involved with many activities and positions at the First Presbyterian Church. His faith and devotion to God was evident in his position as an Elder, Choir Director, Men's Breakfast Club and Sunday School Superintendant.
Bert's memory will live on and be forever cherished by Mienie his loving wife of 52 years, his daughter Marianne (Bill) Quigley, daughter Ria, daughter Wilma (Albert) Reimer, and son Bart (Tanya). Opa had a special place in his heart for all his grandchildren Caitlin and Sean Quigley, Justin Reimer, Theo Zwiep and special granddaughter Jess. Also left to remember are nephew Bill and Beatrix Zwiep and their sons Nik, Richard and families. Left in the Netherlands is sister Roelie, brother Henk and many nieces and nephews as well as close in-laws Albert & Jo Huiskes and Roelie Kellie-Zwiep.
A special service in memory of Dad will be held Friday, June 5th, 2009 at 2:00 at the First Presbyterian Church, 17 Royal Road South, Portage la Prairie. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Bert's memory to the Potage District General Hospital Foundation, 524 Fifth Street South East, Portage la Prairie, Mb R1N 3A8.
