I'm almost sure that that Mary Newlands was born Mary Sey, illegitimate birth 2nd Feb 1823 at Drywells in the Banffshire part of Cabrach parish (the county boundary with Aberdeenshire ran through the parish at this time. Her father was John Sey, about whom nothing is known, and her mother Grizzel Thomson, who married George Newlands11 Nov 1824 in Cabrach. They had 5 children in Keith parish Banffshire before emigrating in 1836 to Kingston ONT where Grizzel changes to the more modern form of the name, Grace - her name echoes down through the descendants of Isaac David. Mary Sey presumably takes the Newlands surname of her stepfather. Grizzel/Grace Thomson's ancestors can be seen at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/stuartpetrie/http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/stuartpetrie/
