I descend from the James Corse Sr. of Deerfield m. to Elizabeth Catlin who had 3 children...James, Ebenezer, and Elizabeth (who was taken captive to Canada after the Deerfield Raid...I descend from her) Captive Elizabeth's brother James m. the daughter of Thankful Nims and Benjamin Munn, Thankful Munn on Aug 21, 1721.

Because of Elizabeth staying in Canada, I have over 40 French lines of ancestors and have traced many of them back to France. In doing this research, it is quickly discovered how important the religious struggles between the Catholics and Huguenots (French Protestants) were in causing the mass migrations of the Huguenots to all parts of the world. Over 200,000 Huguenots left France after the St. Bartholomew Massacre of 22/23 Aug 1572 when over 8,000 Huguenots were killed in Paris during the wedding of Henry Navarre, a Huguenot and Marguerite de Valois ( a Catholic and dau. of Catherine de Medici). It was Catherine who ordered the mass murder through her weakling son, Charles IX...Henry, in order to save himself, denounced his Protestant faith, and became King Henry IV in 1598, the year he proclaimed the Edict of Nantes by which Huguenots were allowed to practice their faith in 20 Free Cities...Henry was murdered in 1610, and the persecution started in earnest under Cardinal Richelieu...one of the Free Cities was La Rochelle a haven for thousands of Huguenots many who fled to Canada after the city fell to the Catholics in 1629...The ancestors of Godfrey Nims could have come from any of these 20 cities...

I would have to say that because Godfrey Nims spoke French and wanted to escape to Canada that he most likely came to New England from Canada...many French Huguenots came to Salem MA after 1660 from the channel islands of Jersey and Guernsey...between 1618 and 1725 5000-7000 Huguenots came to N. America...see Huguenots-- using Google. TG
