Nivinson is not a Norse name. It just means "son of Niven". Niven is of course Gaelic, but this doesn't imply any Highland associations as parts of SW Scotland were also Gaelic-speaking till the 17th century. I believe that our Nivisons have always lived in the Dumfriesshire area.
