Hi Bonnie. I have been talking with my grandmother, who assures me that the name Nivison is not Scottish but rather a Viking name from the invasions. My family is still on the Isle of Skye, an aunt, uncle and four sons. Their last name is Small. They live year round in Edinburgh, which is where I went to school during high school, at St. Andrews College. We are originally from St. Andrews, my grandmother tells me, and the names associated with my family are Francis Dunham (great grand-mother)who married Harry Hamilton (great grand-father) and had four children, one being my grandfather, Richard Andrews Hamilton. He is deceased. His wife, my grandmother, was the daughter of John Nivison and Margaret Campbell Nivison. My great grandmother, born Margaret Campbell, came to this country never to see her own parents again. I guess they stayed in Scotland and died there. She had two sisters, Elsbeth and a woman we called Nan, though I have no idea what her real name was. Nan seems to be a common nickname in my family. I am wondering how the name Nivison could be Gaelic or Scottish if it is impossible to find its association with any of the clans? I go to the Scottish games in the summer here and there is no reference to the name Nivison at any of the clan booths. I still wonder where it came from- and if my grandmother is right about its Viking origins? Thanks. Nancy
