I have a Stacy H. Applegate that married Elizabeth Ann Ahern probably between 1865 and 1868. I am able to trace him from the 1860 Federal Census in New Hanover Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, through the 1880 Federal Census in Camden City, Camden County, New Jersey. City directories continue to list him in Camden at least through 1891. All census records agree with the 1844 birth year. However I am not able to find him in the 1850 Federal Census. Since Stacy is a relatively unusual name I tried looking for only the given name thinking that the spelling could be off. Oddly, I found in the 1850 Federal Census a Stacy H. Lippincott, aged four years, in the household of Samuel and Pauline Applegate in Pemberton Township, Burlington County. The family also had other children in the household: Allen H. (aged 8), William H. (aged 6) , and Joseph (aged 2). I can find no trace of Stacy Lippincott after the 1850 Federal Census. Is it possible that Stacy Lippincott and Stacy Applegate are the same person? If so, who were his parents and what brought him to the Applegate family? One scenario (absolutely a product of my imagination) is that Samuel was a widower with two sons and Pauline a widow with one son who married and then produced another son together. Given the ages of the children, that could work. But I would really like to know the truth of the matter. Thank you in advance for any information.
