Seeking information regarding a Mary Sooy (or Mary Soah) who married Isaiah Johnson; both of New Jersey. I believe they were both from the Mullica River area ... i.e., around Little Egg Harbor/Washington Twp/Port Republic/Lower Bank. Isaiah Johnson was born May,1770 in New Jersey and died in Clermont Co., Ohio in 1830. Mary Soah/Sooy was born 1772 in New Jersey and died 1856 in Clermont Co., Ohio. I am speculating that Isaiah Johnson, who shows up in Burlington County tax records from 1795 to 1812 may be a son of Mathias Johnson, Sr. of Little Egg Harbor (married to Elizabeth Brookfield). A son "Asiah" and "Esiah" is apparently mentioned in his fathers' 1778 will. Mathias (Sr.) had 7 sons and 2 daughters named in the will. Several of the brothers mentioned in the will (William, Jonathan, Joseph, Jacob, Mathias) also show up on the same tax lists from 1795 to 1812. William and Jonathan have the largest land holdings and Jonathan has a grist mill. This would parallel the division of property in the will, with these two eldest son's getting a larger share of the property. Isaiah has smaller land holdings, befitting one of two youngest son's. Based on age of their oldest child, I believe Isaiah and Mary would have married on or before 1799. Anyone have information about either of these families? I've seen some information posted about some other siblings of this Johnson family e.g., Elizabeth (Weeks) Johnson, and Hannah (Cramer) Johnson. I have even fewer leads regarding this Mary Sooy. Several Sooy's show up in the same tax lists in Little Egg Harbor and later Washington Twp, including a Richard Sooy, Luke Sooy, Charles Sooy and Nicholas Sooy. Does anyone have a Mary of the right age/birth year? The only other potential clue I can think of is that the children of Isaiah and Mary include some names that might fit this Johnson line (Jonathan, Elizabeth, Isaiah, Joseph) and some names that don't see to fit the Johnson names I am familiar with (i.e., Charles, Jemima, Sarah Jane, Mary, Lucy). Could these reflect names from the Sooy side of the family? Charles was the third oldest son of Isaiah Johnson and Mary Sooy, after Jonathan and Joseph (which are Johnson names). Could that point to a Charles Sooy connection? Just a very wild guess. If any of this ties in with other's research, I would appreciate a reply. Thanks!
