Cox death in 1950s or 60s?

Hi-
I'm wondering if anyone can help me with figuring out when James S. Cox died? I find him in 1930 in Essex County living with his 3rd wife, my FIL says he remembers visiting him in the 1950s, and that his dad was involved with taking care of the arrangements. I'm not sure there would have been an obituary.

My big question is, is there a library that has old phone books that can look him up in the 1950s and maybe determine from that when he died?

He was born circa 1865-68, and I haven't found him in the early 1960s on the SSDI.

any advice?
thanks!
Kate
