According to the Ringo Family History, On Dec 14, 1776, 20 British Dragoons under the command of Lt Francis Geary were dispatched to seize a store of arms. As they approached the settlement surrounding John Ringo's tavern a sharpe eyed villager saw them and reported there presence to Captain John Schenck of the Militia. Captain Schenck gathered a small force of Militia and attacked the British Dragoons near Copper Hill, a half mile north of the German Church near Ringoes, NJ Lt Geary was killed in the battle and the surviving Dragoons fled to Pennington.
