Freegift/Edward/John

I'm trying to get info on a John Taylor who was in Amwell, Hunterdon County, NJ in the year 1782. Apparently he was a NJ militia captain in the Revolutionary War. Edward Taylor and Freegift Taylor (2 of his brothers) both left Rev. War pension applications, Both Edward and Freegift stated that they served under their brother Captain John Taylor in 1778/79. In searching the web for the family of these 3 brothers, it would appear that they are the sons of Edward Taylor and Rebecca Stout. However, everyone gives the date of John's birth as 1771. (I've never seen a citation for this date, so I don't know where it comes from) This would make John Taylor 7 years old at the time his brothers said he was a captain in the war. Can anyone help with this mystery? John Taylor was the father of an illegitimate daughter of Sarah Woolverton, who I descend from. Sarah Woolverton's father Charles went after John Taylor for child support, and I've got several court records documenting the case.
