Update on Lydia Ker daughter of William Ker who was the son of Walter Ker. Lydia was the daughter of William Ker and his second wife Catherine Loofborrow. William's first wife was Elizabeth Gordon. William was born ca. 1700 in Freehold, Monmouth New Jersey. Lydia was b. 1742 in Freehold Monmouth, NJ. William was the son of Walter Ker. Walter, b. ca.1656 in Torphichen Scotland (not Dalserf as some claim) and was imprisoned while living in Dalserf ca. 1684/5. Walter may have been a prisoner in Whig's Hole, Dunnottar Castle, but was certainly a prisoner in Edinburgh when his release was purchased on Sept. 3rd 1685 by Dr. John Johnstone. Dr. Johnstone sailed from Leith, Scotland Sept 5 1685 on the Henry and Francis with George Scot. Dr. Johnstone married Eupham Scot in NJ in 1686 (she did not die on the voyage over). Walter married Margaret Johnstone, daughter of John's older brother James ca. 1689 at the end of Walter's indentured servitude. James Johnstone bequeaths in 1691 to Walter and Margaret's second son James Ker, to be held in trust by Walter, 50 Acres of land. Walter was the same Walter Ker of the Sweet Singers of Israel, (a Gibbite). Walter gave up his following of John Gib and repented heavily his act of burning the Bible, which led him to Dalserf where he studied/served under Robert Bruce until he was captured as a Covenanter, or turned himself in to the curate as a self imposed punishment for burning the Bible. At any rate, he is noted as being a pillar of the American Presbyterian Church in New Jersey in the book Six Saints of the Covenant. Walter is not listed on the internet version of the Henry and Francis manifest, either because of his late arrival on board or because he was beholden to John Johnstone, and the others were indentured to George Scot, who knows, but we can use common sense and say that when John Johnstone purchased his release, he would have made sure that Walter was on the same ship when they left Scotland. Lydia Ker married John Taylor and had 5 children that have been identified, Nathaniel Kar (Ker) Taylor, m. Mary Cool Lydia Kar (Ker) Taylor, no other information Catherine Kar (Ker) Taylor m. William Boyd 1784 Elizabeth Ann Taylor b. ca 1781 m. Dugald Cameron ca. 1799/1800 Steuben Co. NY George Washington Taylor b. 1784 m. Christina Clement Steuben Co. NY, 12 children including Dugald Cameron Taylor, Elizabeth Cameron Taylor, Lydia Carr Taylor, Nathaniel Carr Taylor, Clement Taylor, John Taylor, Charles Taylor, and William Boyd Taylor. John Taylor is Colonel of the 4th Hunterdon Militia. His military service has been melded/confused/assigned to Lt. Col. John Taylor of the Middlesex Militia. Col. John Taylor was a farmer/miller in Readington Twp, Hunterdon Co. He started as a Capt of the 4th, became Major, Lt. Col., and Col in the 4th. He served 3 months as Col of a Hunterdon/Burlington Co. Artillery Battalion, then returned to the 4th. He finished the Rev. War in that capacity and was promoted to General after the war. Lt. Col. John Taylor resigned his commission ca. 1779, before the war was over, to return to his teaching profession. He was a/the Professor for Rutgers, then Queens, college. He started as a minute man in Col Nielsons company of minute men, served with Frederick Freylinghausen, usually executive officer when Freylinghausen was commanding officer. When given his opportunity for command he resigned and returned to his students, having taken a one year leave of absense to assist Freylinghausen. A letter written by Professor Taylor to Gov. Livingston of NJ is footnoted assigning Professor Taylor to the 4th Hunterdon which is an egregious error. Col./General John Taylor moved to NY in 1797, where he married prior to 1800, widower Mary Miller Lindsley, whose husband Eleazer had been a Lt. Col. in the Morris County Militia. Col. John quit claims the property of Eleazer to his descendants in 1805, Mary dies in 1806. The last we know of Col/Gen John Taylor is a newspaper obit in the Geneva NY gazette Dec 1811, giving his place of death as prob. Bath (NY) where his son George, and daughter Elizabeth were living. Unknown why the Geneva paper carried the obit. Still looking for Col. John Taylor's grave, other info on parents etc. Still looking for Lydia's place/date of death.
