The state archives are in Trenton. The staff are very helpful.
Research in New Jersey in the 1700s can be frustrating. The two types of records that were reliably recorded and saved from that time period are wills and deeds. The archives has indexes for wills and copies of the wills on microfilm. They also have grantor and grantee indexes for deeds recorded in each county on microfilm as well as the deeds. They have some information on revolutionary war soldiers. They also have some marriage records. If you go to this website you will find some online databases.

One of them is Colonial Marriage 1555 to 1790.I did not find the name Shurte but you can try various spellings.Maybe you will get lucky. You can also get direction on how to get there. The state has an underground parking lot that is free.
The place to start in Bergan County or any New Jersey county is the County Historical Society.I am not familiar with counties in North Jersey but I have found the historical societies in South Jersey have more information about people who lived in the county then the county officials. You should check their websites to see what they have online, what resources they may have, hours when they are open and how to contact them.If you contact them ahead of time they may do some preliminary research as to what they may have.
