Patricia, Paterson was part of Essex County, NJ, in 1832. Passaic County was formed in 1837. The NJ state archives has some information that relates to the records of Essex County during the early part of the 1800's. Here is the link:

There are a large number of Boyces from NJ living in New York in 1860. There is a Daniel Boyce listed, age 30, lawyer, born in NJ, on the 1860 NY census.

Since you know that he owned his home, there may be some tax and property records at the archives. You will have to request the records from the archives. You may also want to consider alternate spellings of Boyce, such as Boice, or DuBoise.
