Churches in Salem County in the year 1860

I was wondering if anyone knows if there was a mormon church is Salem County in the year 1857-1860.

I am trying to locate my great grandfather Thomas Joynes Smedley. His first two children were born 1858 and 1860 in Alloway, New Jersey, but I haven't been able to find any trace of them in the 1860 census so was wondering if I could find them in church records.

I know he did a lot of business with the Quakers so am wondering if there wasn't an LDS church there maybe he went to the Quaker meetings.

Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Leslie Ann
