My husband’s earliest Brant ancestor in our record is William Brant, born 1663. Died about 1725. He married Hannah (?). He came to Newark, NJ early in life and died in Elizabeth, NJ. He was listed as a “planter,” in 1693. Their son was Samuel Brant who was born in Newark, NJ, 1700. He moved to Rahway, NJ where he operated a blacksmith shop about 1725. He died there 1744. He married Suzanna (Susannah) Winans (?) born 1701.She died 1758. She was the daughter of John Winans. They are both buried in the Rahway, NJ Cemetery. Samuel and Susannah Winans Brant had at least four children: Daughters, Hannah and Elizabeth (no further record); Sons, David Brant, b. 1730 and Lewis Brant, b. Aug. 14, 1734. Lewis Brant was married to Ann Morse. Their children were (1) Amos Brant, married Sarah (?) (2) Jonas Brant, married Jane Berkalew. (One known child, Mary Ann Brant who married Alfred Millard Goodwin with one listed son, Clarence Brant Goodwin.) (3) Billy Winans Brant, d. July 19, 1777, buried in Rahway, NJ Cemetery. (4) Susanna Brant, d. Jan. 08, 1761, buried in Rahway, NJ Cemetery. Lewis Brant died March 28, 1796 in Rahway, Union County, NJ. David Brant (my husband’s family line) was born in 1730 and died 1794. His first wife was Mary (?), d. Sept. 19, 1765. His second wife was Mary Chandler, b. 1736 and died August 28, 1806. Both wives are buried in the Rahway, NJ Cemetery. David Brant (1730-94) served as teamster in Capt. Moses Munson's brigade, wagonmaster-general's department, New Jersey militia in the American Revolution. He was born and died in Rahway, N. J. The son of David Brant and his second wife, Mary Chandler was Jacob Brant, b. 1769 and died 1840. His first wife was Sarah Moores, b. about 1766 and died 1819. After her death, he married a second time to Mary Donnelly Bedell. My husband’s line continues from Sarah Moores. Their daughter was Elizabeth Freeman Brant, b. 1802, d. February 07, 1885 in Elizabeth, NJ. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, New Jersey. Elizabeth Freeman Brant married my husband’s great grandfather, Aaron Haviland and they named their third child, Aaron Brant Haviland. The surname Brant continues to be carried as a given (or Christian) name in the present generations of this family. Notify Administrator about this message?
